Lovin' What I Do
Lovin' What I Do...
I just love making homemade crafts growing up. I would work with wire-wrapping jewelry, craft doll houses from scratch, create oil paintings, sculpt ceiling ornaments, etc. In fact, I had FAR too many hobbies and only two petite hands to pull it off. I wish I had four hands or even eight but sadly, this is not the case. There wasn't a single day when I wasn't crafting something.
As hard as it is to believe, before Fall 2019, I have absolutely ZERO sewing skills. Never worked with a sewing machine before in my life. My mom asked me (well... more like a heavily imbued subtle demand, really. Mother is the ultimate divine goddess in the eyes of child, and believe me, you do not simply say 'no' to a goddess) to make her and her friends Wizard of Oz costumes for the Halloween parade for school.
Thankfully she gave me a month notice ahead of time and I was only making Flying Monkey costumes for just two women. Over the course of the month, other coworkers at her workplace in school seen my work-in-progress pictures I've been sending to mom, and they ALSO wanted cool looking handmade custom costumes!
So... not only was I making Flying Monkey costumes for two women, but I was also making custom necklace collars and giant lollipop props for three other women (who were going as munchkins from the Wizard of Oz). Clock was ticking down and ANOTHER teacher jumped the bandwagon! He wanted to be a scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz. With real straws. I must have been out of my mind but I went ahead and agreed to make it for him. A few days later, it was one chaos after another. There was a brief mandatory evacuation due to fire approaching near my hoe residence in California, and despite everything that had happened, I kept working on the costumes. I've come to slowly realize that sewing and making costume props was a fantastic way to relieve stress. May I remind you that a month before this chaos, I had absolutely ZERO sewing skills and never worked with a sewing machine. Never made costumes in my life. Never tried to create shirts, wings, lollypop, hats, etc. It was *such* a huge gamble and I've never been one to disappoint anyone. Never felt so out of my comfort zone in MAH LIFE!!!
Halloween came around, the parade happened, and all of the teachers and kids had such a blast with the Wizard of Oz theme that a local newspaper taken their photos. Everyone had incredible fun and it was the most memorable moments that I guarantee no one will forget anytime soon.
It was both my mom who inspired me to make costumes for Halloween and my best friend, Toya, who inspired me to make items such as quilts, pads, and much, much more. Somewhere down the line, the pandemic appeared out of the blue and I've been making scrub hats and face masks ever since. Many of the essential workers are risking their lives to help others and I wanted to do my part help out as well. I wasn't sure what to do at first. I tried making face masks and well... it was quite stressful to make them without hitting the nose wire sewn inside with a sewing machine. I still make face masks every now and then but it is not my main sewing passion. Then I discovered, much to my astonishment, that I absolutely LOVE sewing scrub hats. I figured that making gorgeous, fun, quirky, seasonal scrub hats will help lighten the mood and hopefully that these scrub hats will bring out a smile for essential workers and patients everywhere.
